How to write a cover letter

1. Use the correct greeting
It would seem a small detail, but by greeting in the letter you can say a lot about the candidate. “Good day” is alarming by infinity, “good day” by inappropriate wish, “welcome” by pathetic.

Use a greeting that fits into the rules of business correspondence: Good afternoon or Hello. This will immediately set a friendly tone, while not being intrusive.

2. Tell us about your interest.
Recruiters have to deal with candidates who clicked on the “Respond” button only because the vacancy “seems to be nothing.” However, it is not clear whether the applicant really wants to get this position or whether he responds to all ads in a row.

In just one sentence in the cover letter, tell us why you liked this vacancy. For example, they are looking for the head of a real estate sales department: “For more than four years I managed a team of managers for the sale of building materials. "The sale of real estate has always seemed to me more attractive, and your vacancy is an opportunity to change the field of activity to a more suitable one for me."

3. Add specifics
In a cover letter, it is important to answer the question of why you are ideally suited for this vacancy. To do this, in one paragraph, describe the significant achievements and skills that the employer will read more about in the resume.

If you are interested in a job as a designer, you can write this: “In the last year, I have been working more with vector graphics, mainly outdoor advertising. The work I am proud of is the corporate calendar for the year (link): my colleagues helped me, and it seems that we were able to make it boring, we received a lot of good reviews from customers and from behance.net users. Also, two years ago, I made animated screensavers for one of the TV channels, here are links to them. "

4. What about the values?
Before writing a cover letter, study the company’s page to understand its corporate culture. If there are direct matches with your values, then this should also be indicated when applying for a vacancy.

Let's say a separate garbage collection is organized in the company’s office, and you really like this idea. Then in the cover letter you can write: “It's great that you think about the ecology of the planet. Every year I participate in tree planting and hand in plastic and glass separately: it is important for me that the company shares my views. ”

5. Conclude with a call to action
In fact, with the help of a cover letter, you are trying to sell your candidacy to a recruiter. Therefore, at the end of the letter, a call to action is appropriate: “look at my resume,” “consider my candidacy for a vacancy,” “ready to answer your questions.” At the same time, do not beg and do not beg - believe me, recruiters have seen a lot over the years of work, so they will appreciate unobtrusive communication.

6. Shorten the letter
Often in cover letters there is a lot of superfluous. Some add an autobiography, others crucify for too long about their motivation. Leave only important and interesting information: for example, add links to your portfolio, if necessary for your profession. It will tell you better than words.

7. Verify Literacy
Just in case, re-read the letter again: random typos can ruin the impression.

Done!
